SKIN FLEX®, A NEW STANDALONE DEVICE FOR THE MEASUREMENT OF THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF THE SKIN AND SUBCUTANCEOUS TISSUES WITHOUT CONTACT.

For the evaluation of the mechanical properties of the skin and mainly for the evaluation of its firmness, various devices, based on 3 principles of measurement, can be used : suction (Cutometer, CK Electronics, Germany), twist (Dermal Torque Meter,) and ballistometry (Ballistometer, Diastron Ltd. England).
Few year ago, we developed in collaboration with the EOTECH Company, a new approach to perform a 3D measurement of the skin and subcutaneous tissues firmness with a calibrated air flow and a fringe projection sensor (DynaSkin, EOTECH/ORION Concept, France).
Developments - Methodology
The aim of this new development was to define a device for the evaluation of the mechanical properties of the face tissues and of their slackening in relationship to the ageing phenomena. Contrary to the existing devices, the measure must be realized in adequacy with the clinical perception of these skin slackenings.
Today, ORION Concept developed a new system allowing this measure in 3D, without contact and based on an air flow for the mechanical strain and a high-speed camera coupled to a laser for a real-time measurement of the skin deformation and relaxation. This new device, handle free, gives a quantitative information about the tension, firmness, elasticity and viscoelasticity (Uf, Uv, Ua, R) of the skin and subcutaneous tissues and moreover, an accurate information about the ageing of the skin based on the kinetics of its relaxation.
After a validation of this new device (Repeatability, CV=1.2% ; Reproducibility, CV=2.3%) and its sensibility to the age of the skin.
A study performed on 20 subjects has demonstrated its capability to validate the immediate effect of a cosmetic product on the firmness of the skin onto the face.
This new device allows to combined a precise measurement of the mechanical properties of the face tissues, in vivo, at the scale of the clinical perception and gives new information about the firmness and ageing of these tissues and their slackening.
